Sable Ferrets

Updated October 2026 · By the Adopt a Ferret team

Sable is the most common and most recognizable ferret color: dark brown guard hairs over a cream undercoat, darker legs and tail, and a mask around the eyes. It's the coloring closest to the wild European polecat that pet ferrets descend from. We have 7 sable ferrets available now, including in our bonded pairs.

What does a sable ferret look like?

  • Guard hairs: warm dark brown.
  • Undercoat: white, cream or light gold, showing through the guard hairs.
  • Points: legs and tail darker than the body.
  • Mask: a full "bandit" mask or a narrower T-bar.
  • Nose and eyes: nose brown, black or speckled; eyes brown to near-black.

Do sable ferrets change color?

Their shade shifts with the seasons. In winter the thick undercoat shows more, so a sable can look lighter and fluffier; in summer the thinner coat looks darker and the mask can fade or narrow. Many sables also lighten a little with age.

Our sable family

Our sire Clyde and our dam Willow are both sables, so sable kits turn up in our litters often. And yes, one of our sable girls really is named White!

Common questions about sable ferrets

Is a sable ferret the same as the animal called a sable?

No. A sable is a separate wild species of marten. "Sable" as a ferret color just describes the rich brown coat the two have in common.

Are sable ferrets good for first-time owners?

Color doesn't affect temperament; parents and upbringing do. All of our sables are friendly and up to date on shots.
