How Much Does a Ferret Cost?
Updated October 2026 · By the Adopt a Ferret team
A ferret typically costs $100 to $500 to buy or adopt in the US, depending on where it comes from. Our ferrets are $200 each or $350 for a bonded pair. Budget roughly $300 to $700 more for setup and $500 to $1,000 a year for food, litter and vet care.
How much is a ferret?
The price of a ferret depends mostly on where you get it. These are typical US ranges; prices vary by region, age and color.
| Where you get it | Typical price | What's usually included |
|---|---|---|
| Private breeder or home raiser | $150 to $600 | Young kit, often not yet spayed/neutered; you can usually see the parents |
| Pet store chain | About $150 to $400 | Usually already spayed/neutered and descented; usually bred on large commercial farms |
| Rescue or shelter | About $50 to $200 | Often adults, usually fixed and vet-checked |
| Adopt a Ferret (us) | $200 each / $350 per pair | Home-raised, up to date on shots, parents shown on the site |
How much are ferrets at pet stores like Petco?
Large pet store chains that sell ferrets usually price them in the low-to-mid hundreds of dollars, and prices change by store, color and promotion. It's best to check your local store. Pet store ferrets typically come from large commercial farms and are already spayed or neutered and descented, which is part of the price. A ferret from a smaller breeder often costs about the same. The difference is that you usually know its parents, its age and how it was raised.

Keep an emergency fund too. Ferrets are prone to some illnesses as they age, such as adrenal disease and insulinoma, and treatment can cost several hundred dollars or more. Some pet insurers offer exotic pet plans that cover ferrets.
How much does it cost to spay or neuter a ferret?
Spaying or neutering a ferret usually costs $150 to $500, depending on your area and vet. Our ferrets are not spayed or neutered, so include this in your budget. It's especially important for females: an unspayed female that stays in heat can develop a life-threatening anemia. Your vet may also offer hormone treatments to manage a female's heat.
Why do ferret prices vary?
- Source: breeders, pet stores and rescues have very different costs and setups.
- Spay/neuter and descenting: ferrets that are already fixed usually cost more up front.
- Color: some breeders charge more for less common colors; we charge the same for every color.
- Age: young kits are often priced higher than adults.
- Pairs: many sellers, including us, offer a discount for a bonded pair.
How much does a ferret cost over its lifetime?
Ferrets usually live about 6 to 10 years. Adding the purchase price, setup and yearly costs, plus some vet care later in life, a lifetime total of $5,000 to $10,000 is common. That's worth knowing before you commit.
