Do ferrets need to be in pairs?
Ferrets don't strictly need a companion, but most are happier with one. They're social animals that play, wrestle and sleep in piles. A single ferret can thrive if you give it several hours of play and attention every day, while a pair keeps each other company when you're busy.
Why adopt a bonded pair?
- No introductions. Introducing new ferrets can take weeks; a bonded pair already gets along.
- Less boredom. Two ferrets entertain each other, which means less mischief.
- Better value. $350 for both instead of $200 each.
Important: male and female pairs
Both of our pairs are one male and one female, and none of our ferrets are spayed or neutered. Ferrets mature at around 6 to 9 months, so plan with an exotic-animal vet to spay and neuter them, or keep them apart when the female comes into season. This prevents unplanned litters and protects the female's health.
A pair also needs a bigger cage and more room to play. See our ferret cost guide for typical setup costs.
