What to know about female ferrets

Female ferrets are called jills. They're noticeably smaller than males, usually about 1 to 2.5 pounds as adults, with a slimmer, more delicate build. Many owners find jills especially quick and curious.

Spaying a female ferret

None of our females are spayed. This matters more for ferrets than for many pets: a jill that comes into heat and is not bred can stay in heat for months, and the high estrogen can cause a life-threatening anemia. Before her first season, usually the spring after she reaches about 6 months, talk to an exotic-animal vet about spaying her or managing her heat with a hormone treatment.

Male or female?

Both make wonderful pets. Females are smaller and often busier; males are larger and often more laid-back. If you can't decide, see our male ferrets or a bonded pair.
