Ferret Adoption FAQ
Straight answers to the questions we're asked most. Still wondering about something? Ask us.
Adopting from us
How much does it cost to adopt a ferret from you?
Every ferret is $200, whatever its color, sex or age. A bonded pair is $350. See our ferret cost guide for setup and yearly costs.
Are your ferrets vaccinated?
Yes. All of our ferrets are up to date on shots when they go home. Ask us which vaccinations your ferret has had and when the next one is due, and keep your vet up to date.
Are your ferrets spayed or neutered?
No. None of our ferrets are spayed or neutered. Most owners have this done by an exotic-animal vet. It's especially important for females, because an unspayed female that stays in heat can develop a life-threatening anemia. Neutering males reduces musky odor and territorial behavior.
How old are your ferrets?
Our available ferrets are about 3, 6 and 7 months old, from three litters. Each ferret's page shows its age and approximate birth month.
Can I see the parents?
Yes. Every ferret's page links to its sire (father) and dam (mother), and our parents page shows all of our breeding ferrets and their litters.
Are you a ferret rescue?
No. We raise our own ferrets at home and place them with new families for an adoption fee. If you're looking to rescue an adult ferret, a local ferret shelter is a great option too.
Can I adopt if I live in California, Hawaii, New York City or Washington, DC?
No. Ferrets are illegal to own as pets in California, Hawaii, New York City, Washington, DC, so we cannot place ferrets there. Some other cities, counties and military housing also restrict ferrets or require a permit, so please check your local rules.
How do I adopt?
Choose a ferret or pair, fill in our adoption application, and we'll contact you. See how adoption works for every step.
Ferret care
Should I get one ferret or two?
Ferrets are social and most are happiest with a companion, but one ferret can do well with several hours of play and attention every day. We have bonded pairs for $350.
How long do ferrets live?
Pet ferrets usually live about 6 to 10 years. A good diet, regular vet checkups and a safe, ferret-proofed home help them reach the upper end of that range.
Do ferrets smell?
Ferrets have a natural musky scent from their skin oils. Washing bedding weekly and cleaning litter boxes daily keeps it mild. Bathing too often actually makes it stronger, because the skin produces more oil. Intact males smell strongest, especially in breeding season.
What do ferrets eat?
Ferrets are obligate carnivores. They need a high-protein, high-fat, low-fiber diet based on meat, such as a quality ferret kibble or a properly balanced raw diet. Avoid fruit, sugary treats, dairy and grain-heavy foods.
Are ferrets good pets for beginners?
They can be, if you're ready for their needs: daily playtime, a ferret-proofed room, a meat-based diet and an exotic-animal vet. Ferrets are playful and affectionate but curious and mischievous, a bit like a cat with a toddler's energy.
