Black Roan Mitt (BRM) Ferrets
Updated October 2026 · By the Adopt a Ferret team
A black roan mitt, or BRM, combines a color with two patterns. Black means very dark guard hairs, roan means white hairs mixed evenly through them, and mitt means white feet. Together they give a frosted, salt-and-pepper coat with four white "socks". We have 3 BRM boys available now.
What does a black roan mitt ferret look like?
- Coat: dark, nearly black guard hairs mixed with white ones, so the ferret looks frosted or silvery rather than solid.
- Mitts: white on all four feet, and often a white bib on the throat.
- Face: the mask can be softer or broken up by white hairs.
Breaking down the name
| Part | Type | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Black | Color | Very dark guard hairs |
| Roan | Pattern | White guard hairs evenly mixed with colored ones |
| Mitt | Pattern | White feet, often with a white bib |
See our ferret colors and patterns guide for the other patterns, such as blaze, panda and point.
Do roan ferrets get lighter?
Often, yes. Roans tend to look a little whiter after each seasonal shed and as they age, so a BRM kit may be noticeably lighter as an adult. That gradual change is part of the charm.
Our BRM boys
Finn, Simba and Max are brothers from our April 2026 litter, by our sable sire Clyde and chocolate dam Mocha. Each one's roaning and white markings are a little different, so compare their photos. Simba, for example, has a white stripe on his head.
Ferrets with large white head markings have a higher chance of reduced hearing, so ask us about any ferret you're considering.
